An enterprise social network redesigned around the people who use it, with new users uncovered in research
Viasoft develops business management software. Nela is the enterprise social network that connects people across an organization, with announcements, events, tasks and training. Tog Lab ran the user research and redesigned the web platform and the app.
What changed
- Users who weren’t on the mapThe research found indirect users, whom Viasoft began to factor into the product’s value chain.
- Simpler web and appThe redesign reduced screen complexity and organized flows and information to engage each group.
- A foundation for the team to build onColors, typography, grids, tables and buttons specified so the development team could keep the same standard.
The challenge
An enterprise social network only works if people come back to it every day. Nela needed to become simpler to use and to engage different groups, on the web and on mobile.
What was missing was a deep understanding of who these users were and how they used the platform day to day.
Cluttered screens
Too much information on one screen made it hard to find announcements, events and tasks.
Groups with different needs
Employees, managers and those who publish announcements used the platform in different ways.
Growth without a standard
Without a component library, every new screen was designed from scratch.
What we did
From the first conversation with the team to the components handed over to development.
- WorkshopImmersion with ViasoftA session with the team to gather the product’s needs and goals.
- ResearchInterviews and usage dataQualitative research with employees, heatmaps and platform navigation data.
- RedesignWeb and appNew screens for the web platform and the app, with structured information and shorter flows.
- ComponentsLibrary for the teamSpecification of styles and components so the application could evolve to a consistent standard.

Working with Tog helped us better understand our users’ needs and identify new indirect users. The qualitative research and the mapping of usage data were decisive in redesigning the interfaces of the Nela platform.

What this case study shows
Usage data shows where to look
Heatmaps and navigation data pointed to the areas that deserved more attention in the interviews.
Research in real use reveals more
The indirect users only appeared when the research followed real use of the platform.
Components keep the standard
The library let the Viasoft team keep evolving the product consistently.
Does your product need to be simpler for the people who use it?
We start with a conversation and, if it makes sense, research with your users.
